Majorelle - Welcome

The “Menu of the Day” is created using the finest ingredients - olive oil from Puglia, durum wheat semolina pasta, and juicy, sun-ripened tomatoes from southern Italy where fertile soil creates unrivaled sweetness. Classics such as Gnocchi alla Sorrentina and Osso Buco alla Milanaise are guaranteed to transport you to Italy.

The ”Menu à la Carte” offers a memorable gourmet experience that blends the chef’s creativity and commitment to cooking with fresh, premium-quality produce. Here you will find the French classics and signature dishes that are updated seasonally. From homemade foie gras à l’armagnac, to prime ribeye steak, to succulent duck breast with red wine jus, there is something for everyone.

Finally, the menu “Discover the South West” offers a sampler into the culinary delights of the southwest of France. Available only at lunchtimes, this three course meal plays homage to the undeniable hero of the region - the duck. It is common knowledge that the best duck in France comes from the southwest, and here the duck and its foie gras are carefully selected from the best local producers, and slow-cooked in an artisanal manner to bring out its exceptional taste and texture.

Finish off your memorable dining experience with a true Italian expresso or the local digestive of armagnac at our stylish bar.

A historical jewel in the heart of Lourdes

Majorelle - Welcome

Built in 1896 by the nephew of St. Bernadette, Jean-Marie Soubirous and his wife, Benoîte Toulet, the iconic Grand Hotel Moderne welcomed visiting aristocracy and dignitaries in elegance and comfort at the heart of Lourdes life.

Inspired by the desire to build “the most beautiful hotel in the city,” one of the world’s greatest artists of Art Nouveau style - Louis Majorelle (1859-1926) – was commissioned to lead the interior design of the hotel.

Restaurant Majorelle – an artistry of Art Nouveau

The Restaurant Majorelle achieves a warm, intimate ambiance created by rich wood paneling, intricate wood floor patterns.

A signature of Majorelle’s ability to balance tradition with modernity is his hallmark embellishments inspired by nature: stems of plants, water lily leaves and tendrils, as seen carved delicately into the woodwork of the restaurant and also the gold leaf design of the plates.

Pyrenees Marble –A Royal Commodity

Striking marble columns stand tall in the restaurant providing an impressive contrast against the woodwork. Using marble from local Pyrenees quarries, it is also the same prized marble that was used for The Hercules Salon – the King’s private apartment in the Palace of Versailles.

Original Thonet Chairs (circa 1890s)

Michael Thonet is one of the most important innovators in bent wood furniture making. His 1859 chair No. 14 - better known as Konsumstuhl coffee shop chair - is still today called the "chair of chairs" for pioneering technology, craftsmanship, an eye for details and winning the gold medal at 1867 Paris World's Fair. An anecdote tells when the Eiffel Tower restaurant in Paris was first built and furnished with Thonet chairs. One chair fell from the first platform and a height of 57 meters to the ground and was not damaged.

The Architecture

Grand Hotel Moderne was inspired by classical French Baroque architecture similar to the great chateaus built under King Louis XVI reign. The building features curved and sculpted walls, elegantly stone-carved balconies, vibrant colors, and the positioning of tall windows and high ceilings for grand rooms filled with natural lighting.

Moderne

At the time of its opening in 1896 the Grand Hotel Moderne provided the latest in elegance and comfort, offering private bathrooms with hot water, lifts to each floor, and telephones in private booths one of the first hotels in the south west of France to do so. It instantly lived up to its name of being “Moderne” and became synonymous with one of the most sophisticated and beautiful hotels of its time.
